Love

Isa taught that love is not merely a feeling. It is obedience, loyalty, mercy, sacrifice, and practical action. A follower of Isa learns to love Allah with the whole heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love other people in the way Isa commands.

Love begins with Allah, flows through us, and becomes visible to others. Click each heading below to expand or collapse the sections.

Read these passages together slowly:

Matthew 22:37-40 — And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
John 13:34-35 — "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Matthew 5:43-48 — “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect."
John 15:12-13 — “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."
Ephesians 5:25 — Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.

SAY

  • What do these passages teach about love?
  • How is Isa's definition of love different from ordinary human affection?
  • Why does Isa connect love with visible discipleship?
  • Which kind of love is hardest: love for Allah, neighbour, fellow believers, enemies, or family?
  • What does the cross show us about the meaning of love?
  • How has this changed your previous understanding of what love is and what is expected of you?

OBEY

  • Who do I need to love in a practical way this week?
  • Is there someone I need to forgive, bless, help, or pray for?
  • Am I treating my family with the kind of self-giving love Isa commands?
  • What would love look like if I obeyed Isa instead of reacting from pride, fear, or anger?
  • What would your family, friends, neighours or town look like if everyone loved like this?

SHARE

  • Who can I encourage with one of these passages this week?
  • Who needs to see the love of Isa through my actions?
  • Who could study these passages with me?
  • Who will gently remind me how to love better?

Love is not weakness. Love is strong obedience to Allah. It shows truth, mercy, sacrifice, forgiveness, courage, and holiness in action.

The Shape of Love

The Injil shows several connected forms of love:

  • Love Allah: with the whole heart, soul, mind, and strength.
  • Love your neighbour: treating others with the mercy and care you would desire for yourself.
  • Love one another: the family love that marks followers of Isa.
  • Love your enemy: refusing revenge and praying even for those who oppose you.
  • Sacrificial love: the love of Isa, who laid down His life.
  • Household love: husbands loving their wives with Christlike sacrifice, not domination.

Look Ahead

Choose one practical act of love this week:

  • Encourage someone who is tired.
  • Apologise where you have been harsh.
  • Pray for someone difficult.
  • Serve someone quietly without needing praise.
  • Show patient, sacrificial love at home.

Ask: Who will I love this week, how will I show it, and who will ask me if I did it?

Commissioning

Pray together.

  • Thank Allah for showing His love through Isa.
  • Ask Allah to make your love practical, visible, and obedient.
  • Pray for courage to love enemies and difficult people.
  • Ask Allah to strengthen marriages, families, and friendships.
  • Pray that others would recognise the disciples of Isa by their love.
